--The Art Of Forgetting--

Hiya there,
So recently I have been working on this story, and I kind of actually like it. So I thought, hey why not share it with your readers. This story is different from the Trifles but who knows I might some how incorporate some generation, or something like that.

Warning:: PG13 [There is this sex scene but it isn't so detailed. Also there are scenes about alcohol and such Oh yeah there is also cussing in there.]
On a different note I hope you enjoy it ^-^

PS. I will update this one too as much as I can, and I will definitely leave little hints of updates on the TS3 forum for the Trifles.

The Art Of Forgetting

I stood there in the field watching the fireworks fly up into the air, and explode making the stars jealous of their beauty. Kale had his arms around my waist, and his head resting on top of my brown curly hair. It was Canada day and our families decided to get together and celebrate the day, being the proud Canadian’s we are. My phone started to vibrate; displeasingly I shoved my hand into my pocket and pulled out my blackberry. I rolled my eyes when I saw who sent the message, of course Addison would be the one texting me when I am with Kale.
“You ok babe?” Kale whispered into my ear, while hugging me even tighter.
“Yeah it’s just Addison; I’ll give her a call later for now I just want you to stand here with me forever,” my stomach grumbled, “well after I get a hotdog.” I pulled away from him and ran up to the empty plate which was on the picnic table. My stomach obnoxiously grumbled again, “Mom where did all the hotdogs go?”
“Oh I put them in the fridge.” I sighed. Now I have to go inside to get a hotdog? What kind of barbeque is this? I ran through the sliding doors and made my way to the fridge. I popped open the fridge while I grabbed Kale and myself a can of beer. I was applying the ketchup to my hotdog when I heard this weird moaning noise coming from the living room. I put down my hotdog and crept to the living room. My eyes grew huge and my cheeks became a vivid shade of red. My brother looked up to me and all he did was glare. Rebecca gasped, and pulled Nate on top of her.
“Meggo! Get out of here!” he complained at me.
“Why don’t you get a room?” I said as I tried to kick the mental picture of them having sex out of my head. Feeling sick to my stomach I trashed my adorned hotdog and grabbed the two cans of bud light to Kale.
“What took you so long?” he asked as he grabbed a can from my hand.
“I ran into Nate and Rebecca on the couch, “I gagged, “remind me to never follow a moaning noise again please.”
“No can do Megs,” he said mischiefly as he took a sip from his can.
“Why is that?” I questioned.
“Because one of these days you are going to be following a moan, and it’s going to belong to me, and baby I am going to be calling for your love,” he laughed. Kale put his arm around me and pulled me in closer, “Because Megan Dixon I am crazy about you.” Feeling like a total goofball I turned a blazing shade of red, and dug my face into his chest.
“I love you Kale,” I spoke quietly hoping he would reply with the same answer, and like always when my hopes were high for him, he would never tear them down.
“I love you too Megan,” he murmured softly into my ear. He pulled me down into the grass, and kissed my head gently over and over again while rubbing my arm. Could this day get any better?

Unfortunately it didn’t, because Kale soon went home with the rest of his family and I went to my room. I softly closed the door behind me and watched Kale pull out of the drive way. He winked, and disappeared into the street. I sighed and dropped on my bed with my laptop. I logged into facebook and found Addison online, might as well talk to her.
Megan Dixon:  Hey Addy! ;D
Addison Fletcher: Hi :D So did you get my text?
Megan Dixon:  Uh yeah but I didn’t get a chance to read it because I was kinda busy with Kale.
Addison Fletcher: K well Marissa is havin a party on Friday and so I was wonderin if you were gonna come?
Megan Dixon: Do I have to? I was just gonna spend the night with Kale.
Addison Fletcher: Bitch I went to your grandma’s party, you have to come to this!
Megan Dixon: But you love Grammie! Fiiiine be that way whore, but I am not going to be playing her retarded games k?
Addison Fletcher: K sure, ask Kale if he wants to come
Megan Dixon: I will talk to him later
Addison Fletcher:  Alrighty I got to go I’m hanging out with this sexy guy my cousin brought with her ;) Catch you later love <3
Addison Fletcher: Oh Happy Canada Day!
Megan Dixon: Kay bai love <3 Have fun with Mr.Sexy
Addison Fletcher: Oh you know I will ;)

I laughed and signed out. I changed into my PJ’s and combed my hair, soon enough I tucked myself into bed and closed my eyes.

The music was booming very loud, bodies were grinding against each other. The lights turned on and off, and people were shouting and hollering across the room. Marissa’s bar was crowded, there were girls dancing half naked on top of the bar. And some stupid guys were having a chugging contest across the room. I squinted my eyes and noticed Kale sitting in the hot seat, with seven empty shots in front of him. I rushed over to him and put my hand on his,
“Kale stop it!” I shook him, “look at me Kale! Stop drinking you are going to get sick!” He pushed me aside and swallowed down another shot. The guy across from him passed out on the table, without drinking the eighth shot. Kale was declared the winner. Woozily he got up and raised both of his hands,
“Take that bitch!” he screamed. He put his arm round me, “babe I’m getting kind of tired let’s go home.” I pushed his arm off of me.
“Take yourself home!” I stalked off angrily. From behind me he shouted that he can take his own ass home! I was standing on Marissa’s deck and I heard Kale’s truck roar to life. He backed out of the driveway and sped down the street.

My dream shifted

I was standing in the city hospital, and my parents and Kale’s were talking to the doctors. Kale’s mom was crying brutally. My mom put and arm around her and walked down the hallway. I glanced over at Kale’s dad he looked like he hadn’t slept in days. There were dark circles underneath his eyes. My dad walked over to me.
“Baby I have some bad news,” he began, “K-Kale is no more...” My heart banged against my chest. This could not be happening. Not Kale he had just told me he loved me. How did this happen? He couldn’t leave me now.
“No daddy, no” I buried my face in my dad’s chest and sobbed uncontrollably. He wrapped his arms around me, and stroked my hair.

I woke up in a panic. My body was dripping with sweat, and my heart raced a thousand miles per hour. I looked around me and assured myself that this was just a dream. I rubbed my eyes and looked over at my clock; it was 6:30 AM.
I arose from bed and headed to the bathroom. After taking a shower and changing into a sweater Kale bought me and leggings, I felt a lot better. I walked downstairs, and made myself toast. I sat down and munched on the toast, while watching the news.
“Another drunken driving caused accident occurred yesterday on 23rd street. Andrew Marsh, high school graduate was drunk way over the limit. He was in the car with his girlfriend Misha Tang, who is still in the hospital in the emergency room. Andrew’s friends explain that he had way too much to drink at the party last night, and he was in no condition to drive. He told them that he would manage. Now he lies dead in the city hospital. Please kids don’t drink and drive.” The news cast cut and they went to commercial. I remembered before Kale had left yesterday he had a can of beer or two. What if? What if my dream came true? I ran up the stairs and into my room. I dove across the room and grabbed my cellphone. Panicky I dialled his number. After three rings someone picked up,
“Hello? Hello? Kale!” I cried.
“Megan? Are you ok? Baby what’s wrong? What happened?” he sounded alarmed on the phone.
“Are you ok Kale?”
“Of course I am. You’re the one who doesn’t sound okay.”
“Dear sweet god, I’m glad you’re ok. I had a terrible dream about you and—“I babbled.
“Shhh I’m ok. I will come pick you up later, and we can go to the lake or something,” he suggested.
“Alright...then come soon.” I slid my phone shut and hugged it tight. I slid my phone into my boot, and went back downstairs.
“Good-morning Megan,” my mom smiled. She was making pancakes, “would you like a pancake sweetheart?”
“No I’m fine,” I said quietly.
“Sweet heart could you go wake up Nate? He has to apply for summer school,” she sounded irritated. Last year my brother didn’t do so well in school. He almost flunked every class, though he did pull it together during exam week. Mom was still pretty pissed, so she told him that Summer school was going to be his punishment.
I walked down the stairs, and into Nate’s room. Nate practically owns the entire basement. It smelled like him, it had all his stuff; now to come to think of it, it’s kind of starting to look like him. I searched the room and found him lying on the floor in his boxers. I rolled my eyes and crouched beside him. His breath reeked of alcohol. I poked his cheek.
“Wake up Nate! You have some applications to fill out today,” I shook him. His eye twitched open, and he smiled very stupidly.
“Screw you,” he whispered.
“Well that was very sweet of you, now could you please get your ass off the ground?” I tugged on his arm.
“Leave me alone Meggo,” he pushed me away. Ever since we were little Meggo was the nickname Nate solely kept for me. He got really pissed when someone else called me Meggo. Like this one time his best-friend Aaron called me Meggo, and the next day he came over to our house he had a black eye.  I was definitely only his Meggo.
“Nate please wake up!” I shook his arm, “I’m not leaving until you get up!”
“Then you can sit here all day beside me, and watch me sleep.”
“Listen Nate, I’m sorry that I saw all that. You could’ve at least gotten a room! I bet our couch smells weird now. Also were you wearing a condom? You better of been wearing a condom!” Nate sat up and rubbed the sleep out of his eyes.
“You’re so funny Meggo. Man I was glad that it was you who saw us. If it was mom or her parents I would’ve been screwed. And I’m sorry you had to see that,” he punched my arm lightly.
“I won’t tell anyone,” I said as I got up from the Nate infested floor.
“Thanks Meggo. You know I love you right?” he hugged me.
“You tell me that all the time. I love you too Nate.”

Nate had finally gotten up, so I went back upstairs. I pulled out a stool, and sat on it. Mom turned around and frowned.
“Something wrong honey?” she walked over to my side and put an arm around my shoulder, “you seem kind of down today, something on your mind?”
“No I’m fine actually,” I lied. What was I supposed to tell her? That I dreamt Kale died!? They say if you share it with someone it comes true.  “Actually mom Kale and I are going to his cabin tonight,”
“Just you and Kale?” she sounded worried.
“Yes, is that a problem mom?”
“No sweetheart I trust you, it’s just that...you never seem to spend time with the family anymore. You always seem to have something to have something to do ever since you started dating him. I just miss you that’s all,” she frowned.
“Mom you can’t miss me when I’m here, and if you want we can spend the whole weekend together?”  I looked up at her and her face brightened.
“Sweetheart that would be wonderful, we could go book the spa...” she walked out of the room planning our weekend.
“Don’t worry about her Meggo,” Nate walked up the stairs all dressed, and ready to go. “She misses me all the time, and the weekends with her aren’t that bad. This one time we had a pottery class together!” he laughed.
“Yeah....that sure sounds a lot of fun!” I ignored the rest of what he had to say. Was I really spending every waking minute with Kale? Why shouldn’t I be...I used to have a major crush on him when we were little....

I was ten years old, when I had first met him. Addison and I were sitting on the swings at the local park. Addison was whining about the doll house her dad got her birthday.
“You know Megan pink isn’t the color I wanted for Jennifer’s room...” she babbled. Of course I sat there pretending to listen to her. While she rambled on and on about her doll house, I was scanning the park. Not many kids come to the park anymore; I used to remember when tons of kids came. There was no one by the tree house, no one by the slide, no one by the garden, no one by the water fountain, but there was...a boy with sandy blonde hair and blue eyes sitting under the shade of the tree.
“Hey who’s that?” I pointed at him.
“I don’t know, I think he’s new! Let’s go say hi!” she pulled me off the swing and ran to him. We were standing right in front of him, he looked up and smiled. When I first saw him up close I literally froze. His smile was so handsome, and genuine it made me feel sick. Lucky for me Addison did all the talking, and I just stood there and stared.....

New Years 2009

Kale had been gone for three months, and I had been missing him terribly. Over the years he and I got to know one another pretty well. He was my best-friend and maybe soon to be boyfriend. I was sitting cross-legged on Addison’s bed when my butt started to vibrate. I pulled out my phone, and literally screamed when I saw who the text message was from.
“Holy shit Addison! Kale texted me!”I freaked.
“What did he say!” she snatched the phone from my hand and read aloud, “Hey Megan! Guess what! I’m coming home on New Years! So I’ll see you at your party! Can’t wait to get my hugs from you and Addison ;)  xoxo Kale.” I jumped to my feet and grabbed the phone from her. I read over the message over again, and couldn’t believe it! He was coming home!
“Addison we need to go shopping!” I yanked her arm, “grab your card, because you’re paying for my outfit!”
On New Year’s Eve we had invited several families, and of course friends. There were kids, teenagers, and adults sprawled through the house. The little ones were playing hide-n-seek, the adults were having wine, and the teenagers were all in the basement doing who knows what! I was up sitting on the stairs, staring at my phone. I had sent him at least twenty text messages, and he never sent any back. Addison came up the stairs with a can of beer.
“Come downstairs! We are having a blast! Michelle just got stuck in the closet with Austin,” she laughed, “Oh and your cousin Victoria made out with Lisa, all the boys just whistled.”
“As much as that sounds fun....I’m not coming downstairs until Kale gets here,” I sighed. Where the fuck was he? I hope he didn’t miss his flight or something. Please, please get here soon!
“You can wait downstairs with me, and I heard that Noah wanted to get in the closet with you...” she raised her eyebrows, and licked her lips.
“I’ll pass...if I want to get in the closet then it’s going to be with---“I stopped. The front door opened and in walked Kale! I pushed Addison out of my way, and ran for Kale. I guess he saw me coming from a mile away considering the look on his face.
“Megan!” he opened his arms on cue, and I dove into them. He wrapped his arms around me tightly. “I missed you so much Megan,” he whispered.
“I missed you too.”
“Ahem...where is my hug you ass?” Addison tapped her foot against the laminated chest-nut floor.
“Right here, there’s always room for one more in these arms,” Addison gave him a hug, and stepped back. I had just realized that I still had my arms wrapped around him...how embarrassing. I let go and took a good look at him. He seemed much taller than I remembered, and his eyes seemed to be bluer. His hair never lost that Sandy shine. I noticed he also got a tan.
“So how have you been hot stuff?” Addison asked, “Do you want a beer?”
“I have been good, the trip was just relaxing. And no thanks, not in the mood to waste the night with beer. So how have my two favourite girls been?”
“I have been good; school has been boring without you Kale. Glad you’re back though!” Addison smiled, “Oh I gotta go, I bet it’s my turn for the closet!” she scurried down the stairs. Then it was just Kale and me alone...with a crowd of adults.
“You didn’t answer my question Megs,” he bumped my shoulder.
“Oh, basically what Addison said. School is boring, you have been missed by everyone,” especially me.
 “Anything new?” he asked nonchalantly.
“Nope...same old same old,”
“Why don’t we go downstairs, and meet everyone? And see how fun this closet game is...” At that moment I wanted to pull him back. I didn’t want to go downstairs and share him with everyone else; I wanted him to stay by my side the whole night.
“Sure,” I said quietly. As we walked down the stairs everyone greeted Kale. They all ran up to him and hugged him, offered him beer. As soon as everyone greeted him Michelle asked us if we wanted to play spin the bottle.
“ Kale spin the bottle is played differently today, to make things interesting. In the game we play you have a bottle, a hat with a bunch of tasks, and of course people. If you spin the bottle and it lands on someone, no matter what their gender is you have to do whatever you pull out of the hat.”Michelle explained. Kale and I sat down across from each other, since the seating code was boy, girl, boy, girl. Etc...
“Alright my turn!” Casey spun the bottle and it landed on Eric. The boys all whistled. Casey pulled out a slip of paper and read it out loud, “7 minutes in heaven...but don’t go in the closet. The couch is all yours you two.” Casey and Eric both got up and sat on the couch. Eric pulled her in and started feeling her up...I turned my head away in disgust. God let’s hope I don’t get something stupid!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The bottle went around the circle and it stopped in Kale’s hands. Agilely he spun the bottle, and I watched it slowly spin around and around, I swear it was in slow motion mode. When I had realized where the bottle stopped, my guts felt like coming out. The hole on top of the bottle seemed to swallow me into it. I felt like I had been trapped within it, and there is nothing I could do to change the result. A part of me was excited to see what he was going to pull out of the hat and the other half of me was screaming at me, telling me to run out of the room. I glanced at Kale and he was lightly blushing. Michelle handed him the hat and he stuck his hand in. I crossed my toes hoping for something decent to come out of the box. He held a slip of paper in his hand and read it out loud,
“Seven minutes in heaven in a closet....but each of you must remove an article of clothing,” the whole circle went silent. Everyone knew this was going to be good...yet awkward. The only person who would be excited for me was Addison, but she was wasted.
“Go on you two!”Michelle got up and pulled us up. She shoved Kale and me into the closet. “I will tell you when you’re time is up! Remember when you come out something must be taken off!” she closed the closet door behind us, and the closet became dark. I sat down on the shaggy carpet, and Kale followed. We had our backs against the walls, and our shoulders were touching one another’s. We probably sat like that for a minute, and that’s when the real awkwardness kicked in.
“So what do you want to take off?” he asked me softly.
“Erm...what?”
“Well we have to take off something, or else they’ll bug us outside.”
“I don’t know I guess my leggings since, I have a skirt on.”
“Alright then I will take off my shirt,” he pulled his shirt over his head and rested it on his laps. I slid my leggings off and put them beside me, and the closet was filled with silence again.
“How much longer until we get out?” I asked.
“Only a minute has passed by,” he sighed. I sat there waiting for the time to pass by, we talked a little but that was just it. There was a part of me that wanted to take advantage of this moment and actually kiss him. Now or never.
“K-Kale can I ask you something and you promise you won’t laugh?” I stuttered. My palms started to sweat, and I felt very un-comfortable.
“I promise, scouts honour!” he held his hand to his heart.
“H-h-have you ever wondered what it felt like to kiss each other?” I spat out quickly. I turned completely red. I could feel his eyes staring right at me. I should have kept quiet. He was silent and my heartbeat drummed through my ears. Time flew as I waited for a response. The seconds felt like hours. I couldn’t take it anymore, “Never mind it was a stupid question.” I turned the other way. Suddenly I felt a hand on my shoulder. I turned around, and looked down at my hands.
Kale’s hand traveled up my arm, until it was on my cheek. He pulled out his phone and turned it on. Light shone in the closet. He leaned forward, and pressed his lips against mine. They were warm, yet soft. He pulled me closer, and wrapped his arms around my waist. My hands moved up his chest, and carefully I wrapped my arms around his neck. He slowly pulled back but kept himself close to me, we were nose to nose.
“Did that answer your question?” he smiled. My heart did several flips. Everyone in the basement started cheering wildly.
“Five...Four...Three...Two!..One...Happy New Year!” everyone shouted.
He looked at me and smiled, and we both had the same idea on our minds.
“Happy New Year,” we whispered to each other. I pushed myself on him and pressed my freshly kissed lips on his.

                                                              -------------------------
“Hello? Anyone home?” Kale had walked through the front door wearing denim jeans and a blue and yellow plaid shirt. I slid of the stool and jumped into his arms, and wrapped my legs around him. I planted a big sloppy kiss on his mouth. “Woah there babe, no need to get all frisky.”
“I just missed you that’s all,” I hugged him tightly. He gently put me down, and wrapped his arm around my waist.
“Sure you were, you just want me all over you,” he smirked, “Don’t you worry babe we will have tons of fun tonight. You can bet on it.” I slipped into my flip flops and grabbed my bag. I followed him out to his truck and closed the front door behind me.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The car ride to his family’s cabin was mildly romantic. He cranked the windows down, so the summer breeze swept through my curls. He had his hand on mine, and squeezed it whenever he got the chance. “Our Song” by Taylor Swift was playing on the radio.
“Babes, what’s our song?” he asked.
“I have no clue....uh I guess when we splash into the lake, when you whisper in my ear telling me I’m beautiful?”
“Well I say...that ‘Our Song’ will be our song.” He grinned.  Oh how I love Kale.
Kale parked the truck alongside the cabin, and killed the engine. I let go of his hand and grabbed our things out of the back seat. Kale went to the trunk and pulled out a case of beer.
“Did you have to bring that?” I put my hands on my hips, and glared at him, “You know you always finish that case up yourself and then get drunk, and then we have no fun.”
“Don’t be like that Megan. I promise I won’t drink too much. Two beers that’s all. Scouts Honour!” he raised one hand in the hair, and the other on his heart. I rolled my eyes and snatched the keys from his hand.

I pushed open the door to the Nicolson’s cabin with my foot and one hand because someone wasn’t being a gentleman. The door softly closed behind me. I dropped our beach gear and cooler on the couch, and went to the bathroom. I splashed cool water on my face, and felt refreshed. I threw off my clothes, and slipped into my polka dot bikini. Kale helped me tie and the top on, and then he changed into his shorts. I grabbed my shades and sunscreen and went out the door. Kale had set up our beach chairs right on the dock. I ran to mine and laid there on my stomach. I closed my eyes, and blocked out any noise.
Someone slid their hands up my back and stopped around my back. I sat up and screamed. “Woah Megan, chill it’s just me.” His hands ran down my back and then slowly went around my waist. He sat behind me, and I leaned backwards. “I have a feeling this is going to be a good day,” he whispered.
“Me too,” I wrapped my hands around his neck, and embraced the warmth of the sun.

We sat like that for a while, and talking to one another. Then Kale got up and stood at the edge of the dock. He smiled at me, “Come here Megan, I want to show you something.”
Honestly I am not in the mood to get up, “bring it here.”
“I can’t it’s in the water.”
“Fine!” I pushed out of the chair and stood beside him, “I don’t see anything.”
“Are you sure?” he pointed a little further from last time.
“I’m positive Kale! What the hell is it?” Just at that moment he lifted me off the ground and into his arms, and plunged into the water. “KALE!” I screamed. I grabbed on to his neck tightly, and felt the water swallow us whole. When I had finally bobbed back up to the surface he was laughing. Oh no! He shouldn’t have. I jumped on him and pushed his head down. Quickly he grabbed my legs and went underneath me. I was now on his shoulders kicking away at him. “Drop me now Kale!”
“If you say so Megs!” he leaned backwards, and I went head first into the water. When Kale had realized what he had done, he dove in after me. I was underneath the blanket of water blowing bubbles, and waving my arms and legs around like a maniac. Kale grabbed me and swam back to the top. When we had resurfaced I coughed chunks of water. “I’m so sorry Megs,” Kale hugged me tightly. “Are you alright? I won’t do that again I promise.”
“Just shut up Kale,” I pushed him off me, and then gasped for air. Finally air was going through my lungs again.
“Are you alright Megs?” he pushed my hair behind my ears.
“Better...”
“I’m sorry Megan.”
“I forgive you,” I leaned forward and pressed my wet lips against his.
“I love how you forgive me...” he murmured.  We bounced in the water while kissing each other.  His hands were all over me, not leaving any piece of visible skin untouched. Then we started getting carried away. I noticed an unusual breeze on my chest, which I hadn’t, felt earlier. I did a quick check to see if my top was still on. When I looked down, it wasn’t there.  While Kale was kissing my neck I looked around to see where my top had gone. After scanning the lake twice, I saw it at least sixty feet away heading to the other side of the lake. I clasped my body on to Kale’s.
“Kale don’t look down, I’m missing my top,” I now realized that was a very stupid thing to say to a boy. Kale looked down, and just stared at the top of my boobs. “Don’t!” I slapped Kale gently across the face.
“Well...it’s not my fault your top is missing!” he blushed.
“Yes, it is!” I said annoyingly. “Don’t you dare think of letting me go now; I don’t want other people seeing my boobs. Now bring me back to shore, and please, please grab me a towel.” Kale did as I said and gave me a piggy back ride, back to shore. When he touched land I jumped off his back and belly flopped on the sand. It wasn’t the best idea I had at the moment but it covered me up. Kale chuckled and went inside the cabin to grab me a top. Soon Kale stepped out of the cabin with a lime green bra and my blue Areopostale sweater.
“Catch!” he throws them at me and it lands on my face. “Nice catch Megan.”
“Thanks Kale,” I grab the bra and quickly put it on. As soon as I got the goods covered I slipped into the sweater. He sat down beside me and pulled out a can of beer.
“Want one?” he glugged.
“No thanks, and remember mister you’re only having two!” I warned.
“Yes ma’am.”
This was the perfect time for me to tell Kale about the dream I had last night. Since it involved him he had the right to know.
“S-so Kale...about this morning...I need to talk to you,” I stuttered.
“Yeah what was wrong? You seemed scared.”
“Well...I had a dream about you...a-and you were drunk at a party....and then you got mad at me because I wasn’t getting in the car with you. So you decided to drive yourself home. Then my dream changed, and I was standing in a hospital with my parents, and yours. Your mom was crying, and your dad looked like he hadn’t slept in days. My dad then came up to me and told me....y-y-you....died,” tears rolled down my cheek, when I said the last part. Kale had noticed, and put an arm around me.
“Don’t worry Megan, nothing like that is ever going to happen to me. As long as I love you I ain’t going anywhere,” he gently kissed my forehead, “and trust me Megan I’m not ever going to stop loving you. You mean the world to me.”
“As long as I live Kale...I won’t let anything happen to you,” I squeezed him.

Two had turned into three...which had turned into five, so much for Scouts honour. Kale now was barely standing up. The sun had finally set, and the stars reflection was across the lake. Kale was lying down pointing at stars and naming them.
“That one issss Piiinky,” he slurred, “Megann wheeen weeee geeet marrrrried I’m—gonna name our kiiid Piinky!”
“Kale please shut up,” I yawned. Kale had ruined the rest of our night by drinking, and by acting like a total weirdo.
“Nooo yoooou shut uuuup wooooman!” he threw his beer can into the lake. I checked my watch and it was midnight. Might as well get some rest, or else he’ll keep drinking his ass off until there are no cans left.
“Kale please get up; time to go to bed,” I took his hand, and tried lifting him up. He just laid there making goofy faces at me. “Not funny Kale!”
“Yoooou goooo toooo beeed aaaannd I-I-I wiiiiiiilll staaaaaay uuuuuppp!”
“Kale stop being stubborn, you need the sleep. Also don’t ever think about bringing a case of beer with you!” I tried pulling him up again, but he just wouldn’t budge. After ten good minutes passed by, I gave up.
“Mooooooooooooo! Whaaaaaat maaaakes thaaaaat soooound?”
“YOU!” I punched his leg. This was no use! Just then the bushes beside the cabin started to shake. I scooted closer to Kale, and grabbed on to his shirt. “Kale there is something over there!” I whispered.
“A coooow?”
“No you idiot! I think it’s a bear or something!” I closed my eyes, and then slowly opened my right eye. Slowly my heart started to beat normally again.
Out of the bushes stepped out a boy. Not like a little boy, but a teenager like me.  He had soft brown hair, and piercing grey eyes. He was wearing swim trunks, and a muscle shirt.
“Did I scare you?” he asked. He took walked right up to Kale and me, and smiled.
“Yeah...kinda,” I blushed.
“Sorry,” he scratched his head, “I didn’t mean to. I heard some weird noises come from here, and my nieces were getting freaked out. So I decided to check what the hell it was, and the noise led me to you guys. Is everything alright?”
“Oh...well Kale can take the blame for that. He’s kinda drunk at the moment...and drunk Kale is weird Kale,” I laughed.
“I can see that...err...hear that,” he chuckled, “do you need any help picking him up, since he’s asleep?” I looked down at Kale, and noticed he was snoring softly.
“Yeah...that would be great actually.” The boy lifted Kale from his arms, and brought him to his feet. He took one side of Kale, and I took the other. Together we managed to carry him to the couch. When we finally laid him down, I put a blanket over him. “Thanks....uh....”
“Oh sorry, my name is Jared. And don’t mention it.”
“Thanks Jared. My name is Megan if you’re wondering,”
“So I take it that Kale is your boyfriend?” his voice had an uncertainty to it.
“Yeah...apparently future wife too,” I giggled. Then the silence kicked in. We stood there enclosed by the silence for a little bit.
“Well...I should get going. My nieces and friends must be waiting for me. It was nice to meet you Megan, and tell Kale he should lay off the beers if he wants to keep you.”
“Will do,” Jared walked out the door. When he’d left I closed it and locked it. Then turned back to Kale, he was on the couch sound asleep. This was the third time he ruined our special night with alcohol, and Jared was right, if he wanted to keep me...he has to give up alcohol.
I changed into my pyjamas and crawled into bed. When my head hit the pillow, I fell fast asleep.

The sun peeked through crack in the curtains. I got out of bed, and took a nice quick shower. I changed into something comfortable, and went to the kitchen. The kitchen was completely empty of anything good to eat, so I settled for Mini Wheat’s. Kale was still sprawled on the couch, but this time he was snoring loudly. When he wakes up I am going to give him a piece of my mind. After breakfast I thought it was time that Kale woke up.
I crouched beside him and kissed him. His eyes started to open, and he smiled when he saw my face.
“Good morning babes,” he stretched.
“Humph...good morning? I don’t think so!” I sat down on the coffee table and crossed my arms.
“What’s wrong? The sun is shining and I am in a good mood,” he smiled.
“Well isn’t that wonderful for you?” I sneered.
“What’s wrong? Is it something I did? Something I said?” he furrowed his eyebrows, and looked disappointed in himself.
“Listen Kale...you promised me last night that you would only drink two beers. I trusted you on that, and you broke my promise. You practically finished the whole case! This is the third time in a row that you have ruined a special night for us. And you’re lucky that I ran into Jared, or else you would have woken up in the sand.”
“Babes I’m sorry. How about tonight? I will make it up to you. And who’s Jared?”
“We can’t tonight; you and I are invited to Marissa’s party. I promised Addison that we would go to the party, because I don’t break promises. Oh Jared...he’s just a guy who was camping with his nieces and friends. He said that he heard you mooing and wondered what the fuck a cow was doing here.”
“Well...we could book a room for a hotel tonight if that’s what you want?” he put his hands on my knees, “Megan...I’m really sorry.”
“Sorry doesn’t cut it this time,” I said coldly.
“Then what do you want me to do?”
“Just don’t drink tonight please,” I pleaded.
“Alright, anything to keep you as mine,” he kissed the top of my forehead, “well let me change and we should be out. Kay?”
“What about breakfast?”
“I’ll eat when we get to your house,” he walked out of the room.

I had never been so glad to be at my house. I opened the front door cheerfully, and Kale followed. My dad was in the kitchen having a chat with Nate. Mom was probably at work.
“Good morning pumpkin,” dad said as he kissed my cheek, “did you have a good time?”
“It was fine.”
“Did he knock you up?” Nate smirked. I punched Nate in the arm, and whispered that I will tell him later.
“Nate apologize to your sister,” dad said sternly.
“Sorry Meggo, you know I love you.”
“You are forgiven,” I grabbed the jug of orange juice and poured myself a glass. Kale was already helping himself to the scrambled eggs my dad made. Dad looked at his watch and frowned,
“I must be going now, don’t want to be late. Don’t drink too much tonight you three, and have fun!”
“We won’t,” Nate and I said in unison. Kale just smiled, showing the gross eggs that were sitting on his teeth.
“So what did you two do yesterday?” Nate put his dishes in the sink, and leaned against the counter making eye contact with Kale and me.
“Why don’t you ask Kale,” I rolled my eyes, and set the empty glass down.
“What did you do?” Nate glared at him, “did you hurt her?”
“Do you really think I do that?” Kale spitted out.
“You never know,” he took three steps towards Kale.
“Chill out Nate, he didn’t hurt me...almost drowned me...but that wasn’t on purpose. Anyways you know the real reason we went to the lake right? Well he totally blew me off with his alcohol. Dude he was so drunk that this guys nieces were scared of the noises he was making!” Nate had glanced at me one more time, and burst out laughing.
“You fucking kidding me?” Nate laughed, “If you want to get in her pants, get it right man!”
“Nate! Shut up!” I whacked him upside of the head. He turned and glared at me, “so that reminds me are you coming to the party with us tonight?”
“Nope. Rebecca and I are going to spend the night at her place,” he winked.
“I do not want to know about your love life Nate.”
“You know you do,” he grinned, “you want your love life just to be as good as mine.”

As much as it pains for me to say...but Nate was right. I do want my love life to be just as good as his. I mean right now it’s alright. Kale says the right things, does the right things (usually), though it’s not exciting. Every weekend Nate gets together with his girlfriend and they well have...sex. Sex is one of the things Kale and I never...tried to do. It always seemed like, when I brought sex up Kale would change the subject. I wasn’t sure what his problem was with sex, if he wasn’t ready then its ok. Sometimes I feel I am not ready for it, and other days I crave it. There was this one night when I had absolutely thought I was going to lose my virginity to Kale.

It had been three months since we had been dating. Kale had been such a sweetheart, and a romantic. He would kiss me when he got the chance, he told me I’m beautiful in the silenced moments, and he would text me good-morning. Spring break was coming around the corner, so both of our parents decided to have a joint family vacation. We were to spend the week in Quebec City.

If you had ever been in Quebec, you would know that it is beautiful and so cultural it makes you feel beautiful. On every corner of the City there was love and romance lingering through the air. Our parent’s had decided to rent each of us a car. Kale and I had our own car, and Nate and Rebecca had theirs. I was glad they did that or else I would have to see Nate and Rebecca being a couple.

Kale and I had our hands laced through each other’s and we were romantically walking through the streets of Old Quebec. Everything was so old, and breath taking in this ancient City. At that moment I really wanted to get married to Kale and move here, so we could happily spend our lives with each other.

We had only two more nights in Quebec and on the second last night Kale decided we should just spend the night with each other. He had said he ordered sundaes and rented a movie for us. We were watching ‘The Notebook.’ We were all bunched up under the blanket. He had his arm around my shoulder, and I had my head resting against his chest. Through the duration of the movie, I had felt Kale fiddling around with my strap. I looked up at him, and he looked down at me. As if he read my mind he kissed me, and I kissed him back.

The kissing got more intense, and we had forgotten about the movie. I rolled over on my back, and he had both of his arms around me and his lips on mine. We rolled around on the bed, and each time we rolled an article of clothing came off. Our clothes were scattered across the bed, and I was just in my bra and underwear, Kale was covered in sweat, and was in his boxers. He had me on him and he was playing around with my bra hook. I wasn’t sure if he wanted to actually take it all the way tonight.
“Kale...” I moaned. He held me close to him and got up. He took the blanket and wrapped it around me.
“I’m sorry babe I can’t do this...” he dropped his head in shame.
“Don’t apologize...if you’re not ready then you’re not,” I put the blanket over his shoulders and grabbed on to his arm.

That night....I fell asleep in his arms, still a virgin.

“Well I think I am going to take a shower,” Nate brushed passed me, and went down the stairs. That left me and Kale alone in the kitchen. I propped myself up on to the counter and waited for him to finish his eggs. Kale was slowly chewing on his egg that was one of my biggest pet peeves when it came to Kale. It would take him forever to eat his food, unless it was Chinese of course.
After he had finished his food, he put the dishes into the sink and chugged a glass of water.
“Finally you’re done!” I twirled a pen between my fingers.
“I don’t take that long,”
“Yeah you do! All the time, it takes you forever to eat,” he walked over to me, and put his hands around my waist.
“Well sorry for chewing my food,” he said offensively.
“You know I love you right?” I put my finger on his cheek. He moved his head, and bit it gently enough it still hurt.
“Ow!” I winced.
“Sorry let me kiss it better,” he kissed my finger, and then worked his way up my arm all the way to my lips. He kissed me gently, and I could still taste the pepper off his lips. His hands worked their way up and down my back, and slowly underneath my shirt. I stopped. “Is something wrong?”
I put my hands on his chest and let out a little sigh, “listen...I really really love you. I really love it when you kiss me, I love it when you touch me, but...Kale we need to move on past that.”
“What do you mean?”
“Last night...and don’t change the subject on me, last night Kale I thought you and I were going to have sex for once! I thought that it was just going to be me and you. I don’t understand why you won’t have sex with me. Am I not good enough? Am I too innocent? I just want the truth for once please.”
“You want the truth?” he sucked in a big deep breath, “well...the truth is...I’m scared. I’m scared about not doing things right. I’m scared about you leaving me after sex.”
I stared at him for a long time. “Do you honestly think that? Do you honestly think I am going to leave you after sex?”
“Yes...”
“Are you out of your mind? Kale I would never ever leave you. When I say I love you, I mean it! I want you. I want you to be my first, and my last. Kale I love you...” I pulled myself into his arms, and wrapped my legs around him.
“I love you too Megan,” he kissed the crook of my neck. I pulled back, and pressed my lips against his. As our kiss deepened tears trailed down my cheek. Kale picked me up, and took me to my room. I wiped my tears away quickly as I could with my free hand. Kale kicked opened the door to my room, and set me on the bed. I wrapped myself in my covers while he went into the bathroom. Finally he came back after a while, and smiled at me. “Are you ready Megan?”
“Ready for what?” I asked curiously.
“Are you ready to give me your soul?”
“Uh...not quite there yet,” I smiled.
“Too bad!” he leapt on the bed, and wrapped his arms around my waist. He pulled me on top of him. I looked into his seductive blue eyes and blushed. I kissed him hard, and he kissed me back. His hands went underneath my shirt and they clasped on to my bra. He slowly un-hooked it, and then took the shirt off my back too.
Being naked in front of Kale felt natural. Slowly I got his clothes off too and the two of us were in each other’s arms.
“I can’t believe I never did this before,” he said breathlessly.
“Me neither,” He cupped my cheek with his hands and looked into my eyes.
“I love you Megan Dixon.”
“I love you too...” For the rest of the hour we lay there on my bed. No longer virgins. “You know what’s funny?”
“What?”
“That we never planned this...it just happened.”
“Maybe sex wasn’t meant to be planned...it just comes naturally.” He got out of bed and slipped into his boxers which lay beside my night stand. I took my covers and wrapped them around me.
“Where are you going?” I asked.
“Going to take a shower,” he sniffed his pits, “do you still have some of my shirts here?”
“Yeah they’re in my closet,” I pointed at the pink door in the corner of my room. He walked over to the closet and pulled out a dress shirt I got him a while back, and he pulled out his favourite black dress, which belonged to me.
“You’re wearing this tonight,” he threw the dress at me.
“Why?” I caught it between my fingers and set it aside.
“Because you look beautiful in that dress and I want everyone to be jealous of you tonight,” he grinned.
“I hate you.”
“Why?”
“Because you make me blush way too much, it doesn’t feel normal!” I pouted.
“That’s what boyfriends do Megs,” he came back to me and kissed my forehead and walked across the hall with his clothes, and a towel. I collapsed back into my bed and smiled as wide as I could. Nothing could make me mad now, not Marissa, not Nate, nobody, because I have Kale, and he will always forever be mine.

I took a shower and changed into my black tube dress. I straightened my brown regularly curly hair, and put on light make-up. Kale sitting on my bed waiting for me to finish. I couldn’t move around as fast, because I was sore in certain places.
“Thanks a lot Kale,” I straightened out my dress, and fixed my hair.
“What did I do?” he got off the bed, and walked over to me, “besides make love to you,” he kissed my cheek.
“I’m soooore!” I whined. I leaned against his chest. He kissed the top of my head, and wrapped his arms around me.
“I’m sorry. You aren’t the only one who’s sore.”
“Hee hee I’m sorry too...well do you think people will find out?” I looked up into his blue eyes.
“By the way we are walking...probably,” he pressed his nose against mine, and tried to kiss me. I swiftly took my hand and put it between our lips. “Why not?” he frowned.
“I just put on lip gloss and I want it to last for the first hour at least.”
“Please just one kiss...” he made a long face.
“Fine just one...” I went on my tippy toes, and he bent down cloaking me in his arms. He pressed his warm lips on mine. It felt good kissing him. It felt real good.

We left my house half an hour after the party actually started. We rang the doorbell together, and Marissa opened the door. Her hair was pretty wild. She had a zebra print dress on and her lipstick was smeared across her face. Behind her there were kids holding bottles or cans of beer, talking, gossiping, making out, grinding, and dancing. The air smelled like cigarettes, beer and cheap perfume. Not my kind of party.
“Nice to see you guys made it,” she smiled forcefully. I honestly don’t know what it is, but she and I never got along. She always made fun of me, she humiliated me, she did everything you could think of, but hey I am not better either.
“Yeah we couldn’t miss you’re party,” Kale smiled. Yeah...I could. Marissa stepped aside, and walked down the hall. Kale put his hands on my waist and steered me down the stairs.
“Why are we going down stairs?”
“Because that’s where the cool people hang out.”
“When you mean cool people, you mean Josh, Addison, Brad, Danielle, Trish, and Justin?” I laughed.
“Who else?” we joined the ‘cool people’ and started mingling. Addison was snuggled up with Josh her new boyfriend as of this morning. The rest of them just leaned against the wall, and talked. When we came into the reach of their radius Kale automatically left my side, and bumped shoulders with Justin.
“Meggy!” Addison gave me a big hug, “you look sexy! You and Kale look amazing together.”
“Hey Addison,” I hugged her back, “why thank you gorgeous. Kale made me wear this dress, and of course I couldn’t say no.”
“So how was last night?” she bumped my shoulder.
“Do not remind me...”
“What? He wasn’t good in bed?” she looked confused.
“Noooo,” I shook my head, “we didn’t even manage do to it, he got himself drunk and I spent my night alone in bed.”
“I’m sorry...” Addison patted my back, “maybe another time?”
“Too late...” I blushed.
“Wait...What?”
“This afternoon, my room. Three .Words. I. Loved. It.” Addison covered her mouth.
“No way!” she squealed. She pulled me aside, “So...how was it?”
“It was too great for words Addy. He knew when to touch, where to touch, how to kiss, when to kiss. It was magical.”
“Now you want me doing it with Josh!” she laughed.
“Don’t do it too soon,” I warned, “do it when you feel like he’s the one for you.”
“Oh please Megan. I’m not stupid.... I just really hope this works out between us.” She shifted her eyes to the floor, then looked back up and smiled at my weakly. “I better go to him, he looks lonely.”
I looked back at Kale and he looked occupied with his friends, and I didn’t feel like bugging him. I walked across the room and grabbed me a can of sprite, and started to talk to some people. I talked to a couple of girls that were in my biology class, and some guys who helped me put a dance together. After talking to fifty people I lost track of time, and thought it would be a good idea to find Kale. I walked back to the ‘cool people’ and he wasn’t to be seen. Brad was leaning against the door with an ‘I’m pissed’ looked on his face. I assumed that he knew where Kale went, seeing that they are best friends.
“Hey Brad,” I smiled. He looked at me and frowned. “What’s up?” He didn’t say anything. “Do you know where Kale is?” He looked down. “Are you going to answer me?”
He sighed, “Kale got mad at Andrew because Andrew spilled Budweiser on his shirt. Then Kale pushed him, and Andrew shoved back. Then Andrew called Kale a pussy, and Kale told him to fuck off. I tried to stop it, but you know male testosterones. So then Luke told them to have a drinking contest and that’s what’s going on over there,” he pointed towards the bar.
My blood started to boil. I turned away from Brad without saying a word. I cut through the crowd of people. What was he thinking? He promised me that he wouldn’t drink tonight. When I get my hands on him he is going to be dead. Why couldn’t he just behave for once? Why couldn’t he let that slide between Andrew and him?
Strangely this side of the room seemed awfully familiar. There were girls standing on top of the bar trying to act sexy. The guys who were sitting on the stool were whistling their ass off. The strobe lights were flashing everywhere, and honestly this side of the room looked like a whore fest. I pushed passed the crowd of boys, and found myself staring at Kale and Andrew. Both Kale and Andrew looked wasted to the point they couldn’t stand up.
Andrew clumsily put the shot of vodka to his lips. He tilted his head back, and swallowed it in one gulp. He put the shot down, and smiled wryly. Kale pulled his head back and let out a drunken laughter. He grabbed his shot glass and swallowed it. Marissa cheered at his ear; put her hands all over him. That was it she crossed the line. I pushed my way through the crowd of boys, and to Kale.
“Get your hands off of him!” I pushed Marissa, and she fell into a bunch of girls. She scowled at me. At this moment she could scowl all she wanted to, I could care less right now. I turned back to Kale and grabbed on to his arm, “Kale stop being stupid! You’re drunk, and Kale you promised me none of this crap!” he pushed me into Brad, who caught me. “Thanks.” Tears started to run down my cheek, I couldn’t watch this. He promised tonight would be different. I pushed past Brad and ran up the stairs with warm runny tears washing my make-up off. Addison called behind me, but I didn’t listen, this night just keeps getting worse and worse.
I rushed to Marissa’s deck and leaned against it. Tears flooded my eyes, and everything was blurry.
“Why Kale?” I sobbed, “Kale you promised...” I reached into my dress pocket and pulled out my cell phone. I dialed Nate’s number which I knew by heart, for moments like these. If there was anyone’s phone number in the world I had to remember it would always be Nate’s. “H-h-hello Nate?”
“Meggo? Meggo are you alright? What happened? What’s wrong?”
“Can you please pick me up from Marissa’s please...?”
“Yeah, I’ll be right there.” He hung up the phone, and I knew in about a half an hour he would be here soon.
I stood there hugging myself from the wind. I knew I should have brought a jacket with me. Just then I heard the French doors slam shut. I clenched my fists, and turned around. Kale was covered in sweat, and his shirt was ruined. From where I was standing I could smell the alcohol off of him.
“Mmmmegan,” he took three sloppy steps, and tried to hug me.
“Don’t you dare take another step towards me,” I warned, “look at you! You are a mess! You smell disgusting, you are covered in sweat, and you ruined your clothes! But that’s not even the worst part! You broke my promise for the second night in a row! Kale how could you do this to me?”
He looked at me sleepily, “I did all of this for you,” he slurred, “That son of a bitch said he was gonna sex you up! He was going to kidnap you or something...and I don’t like it when someone messes with my girl,” he planted a sloppy kiss on my cheek. “Megan Dixon I love you!”
“Kale please shut up! I’m not in the mood to talk to you,” from the distance I could hear Nate’s truck making its way down the street. “Talk to me when you’re sober!” I pushed past him and hopped into the front seat.

The first thing Nate did when I got into the car was make sure I was ok. He asked me if I felt sick, he asked me if someone tried to kill me, he asked me if Kale took advantage of me.
“I swear if that fucker did anything to hurt you—“
“Nate could we please just leave it? I’m not in the mood to talk about it,” I rubbed my temples. The music at the party gave me a major headache. “Also I’m sorry for interrupting your night,”
“No it’s alright. Rebecca was sick when I got there, she has food poisoning. A bunch of her friends and her went to The Red Dragon in downtown.”
“Oh well that’s too bad...” I said quietly.
“Can I ask you something?”
“Anything.”
“Do you love him?” he looked out his window.
“Yeah I do,” I said confused, “what does this –“
“Meggo, shut up,” he took a left to the country road, “I’m not talking about ‘I love him’ I’m asking you do you love him? Like you feel like he is the one, and you can spend the rest life yada yada yada?”
“Yeah...I guess so...I think I overreacted tonight,” my stomach started to churn, “Nate I don’t feel so good...”
“Don’t tell me you’re going to puke I just cleaned the truck this week!”
“No I don’t feel sick, I just feel horrible! Tonight I yelled at Kale because he was drunk, and he promised me that he would not drink but he did. When I asked him why he claimed that he was protecting me or some shit.” I looked out the window, and held on to the seat, “Nate do drunk people ever lie?”
“Well they tend to over-exaggerate but apparently they don’t lie...why?”
“Nothing...”
“Meggo are you alright?”
“I’m fine, but not perfect.”
For the rest of the ride we were pretty much silent. He kept driving and I kept thinking about Kale. Maybe I should call him when I get home, I feel like a jerk. Maybe what he was saying was true, maybe Andrew was going to do something to me. I shuddered at the thought, what did I ever do to him? Or even, what did Kale do to him? I was so busy thinking about Kale and today that I screamed when Nate closed the door.
“Shhhhh!” he put his finger to his lips, “its midnight and a lot of people are probably in bed! So get out of the truck and go to bed!” I glared at him and then got out of the truck and followed him inside. The house was quiet and not a thing moved. Mom and Dad were probably in bed reading or talking about work. Nate slid out of his shoes and immediately shot down the stairs. I went to my room and threw off my dress, and put on a UBC sweatshirt on and some candy stripped pyjama bottoms. I looked over to my bed and the sheets were still messed up and they smelled really bad. I was in no mood sleeping on that tonight. I looked over at my phone and thought about calling Kale and apologizing but it just seemed impossible, it was still his fault after all. I bet Nate’s still awake.
I walked downstairs and noticed him in his grey sweat pants and his Vancouver Canucks t-shirt. He looked up at me and patted a seat beside him on the couch.
“What are you doing up?” he asked as he flipped through the channels, “I thought you would be in bed.”
“I don’t feel like sleeping in my bed tonight,” I said nonchalantly
“Why?” he had finally settled on Family Guy.
“Nothing really...”
“Well there is a reason why you aren’t sleeping, is there a spider in there?” he teased.
“No...” there is no point in hiding this from him, “well when you were taking a shower...Kale and I were in my room and we had sex....”
“So he finally learned how to get into your pants,” he chuckled, “took him long enough!”
“Oh my god, shut up!”
“Oh my god, shut up!” he mimicked, “dude you had sex, no big deal!”
“It is a big deal!” I spazzed, “I lost my virginity!”
“So? I lost mine years ago!”
“You’re a guy so you probably don’t even care!”
“Just shut up, the highlights are on!” he put his hand over my mouth and intensely stared at the TV. I furrowed my eyebrows and wiped his hand off of my face.

Out of nowhere a chill ran down my spine, and I started to shiver. That was odd. It isn’t even cold in the basement, it’s actually pretty toasty. Then the hairs at the back of my neck stuck up.
“Nate? Did the room suddenly get cold? Or is it just me?” I rubbed my arms.
“No I’m pretty sure it’s not cold, since I’m sitting in a t-shirt. Now will you shut up?” he turned his attention back at the TV. I should’ve known better than to ask him.
Just then the phone in started to go off in the kitchen. I was about to run up the stairs when I heard mom’s door creak open. She moved soundlessly through the hallway and down the stairs into the kitchen. She picked up the receiver with a click.
“Hello?”
I wonder who was calling so late at night. It was probably Kale being his drunk ass self. That boy never quits, and does the most ridiculous things when drunk. My mom gasped, and spoke softly into the phone.  He better not have told my mom we had sex! Or something even worse! My stomach started to churn. What happened on the phone?
“Nate something feels--” before I could finish my sentence mom cut me off.
“Megan, Nate I know you’re awake. Could you please come upstairs for a second?” Nate looked at me and shrugged his shoulders.
As I walked up the stairs my stomach was churning, and I felt like I could’ve puked. That phone call was probably from Kale, I could feel it. Though why would mom call Nate upstairs too? I reached the final step without breath. Mom was leaning against the island, her hair was done in a messy bun, and she was in her night gown and bathrobe. Her face looked saddened and heartbroken; she was rubbing her temples vigorously.
“You called?” Nate put his hand on mom’s shoulder, “what’s wrong?” She turned around and faced Nate. Her eyes were filled with tears, and hurt. Her gaze slowly shifted to me, she took three steps towards me.
The next six words she said ruined the rest of my life, “Kale got into a car accident,” I felt my knees become weak, and I barely could support myself. Nate came up behind me and held on to my shoulders. I closed my eyes, and tears flooded my vision. My heart was yearning for me to see him. I had to see him.
As if my mom could read my mind she helped me into my shoes and into the truck. Nate drove as fast as he could to the hospital. My mom was in the backseat cradling me with her arms, telling me that everything was going to be alright. Nate dropped us in front of the hospital, and I flew out the door. Mom was right behind me, making sure I was strong on my feet. I rushed towards the front desk and slammed my hands on to the cool granite top.
“Kale Nicholson! I need to see him now! My name is Megan Dixon I’m his girlfriend and I need to see him. Is he alright? Is he ok? Can I please see him please?!” I screamed at the secretary.
“Listen could you please calm down?” she stood up and stared me down.
“No you listen! I want to see my boyfriend! He got into an accident and I need to see him. How would you like it if your fucking husband got into one?” I saw Mrs. Nicholson’s Sandy blonde hair, I glared at the secretary and made a dash towards his mom. My plan failed and the lady grabbed my arm.
“Excuse me but you can’t go there!” she gripped on to my arm tightly.
“Get your hands off of me bitch,” I pointed at Mrs. Nicholson, “that is his mom! I need to see her now! Get the fuck away from me!”
“Excuse me?” her arm tightened even more. I clenched my fists; I was ready right then to take a swing at her. My mom then stepped behind me and placed her hand on my shoulder, and squeezed.
“I’m sorry. This is my daughter Megan, and her boyfriend Kale just got into a......accident. We just came here to check up on him, and see if he was ok. That’s his mom Karen over there,” she waved over to his mom, and she walked over to us.
I tugged away from the secretary and held on to Mrs. Nicholson and sobbed. She held on to me tightly, and cried on my shoulder. I had never felt so close to her in my life. I pulled back and kissed her on her cheek.
“How’s Kale doing?”
She looked away and stared at her shoes, “he’s in the Emergency room, they are trying to save him.”
“So you mean he’s not....” I couldn’t even say the word out loud. I could say it when my cat died. I could say it when Addison’s uncle died. I could say it when my grandpa died. But now my tongue was tied.
“No sweetheart he’s not,” she gave me another warm hug.

For the next four hours I spent my time in the hospital, outside the emergency room. Doctor’s came in and out, but no news. Nate had an arm around me, and telling me that things were going to be alright. He tried distracting me with stories about us when we were little, and how I would pretend to be a ballerina and dance around the whole entire house. Sure it did distract me for a little while, but I couldn’t stop thinking about Kale. Was he conscious? Was he breathing? Was he scared? What had happened? Did he hit someone?
“Nate?” I spoke softly enough so I didn’t wake up mom and Mrs. Nicholson.
“Yeah?” he gripped my shoulder tighter.
“I’m going for a walk.”
“Okay.”
I walked past the Emergency room. When we passed by I couldn’t help but stare at the doors. They were taunting me; they were keeping my baby in there. I just want to bust through those doors, and hold him in my arms and kiss him gently wherever it hurts. I’ll kiss all his injuries better, just like he used to do to me.

Kale and I were twelve years old. It was summer time and the birds were singing and, the sun was always out. You know how summers are, full of friendship, and playing outside with your buddies. It had been our second summer together, and every summer he and I went through a different phase. The first summer it was the “reading” phase. We would spend all our time under the shade of a tree and read comic books, or novels. I know it probably doesn’t sound fun, but to me it was special because I got to read comics with him. The second summer we spent most of our time at the beach with our parents. Every weekend we would go to the beach and build sand castles, eat drumsticks with caramel, and swim in the salt water. If we happened to stay at the beach until sundown we would build a fire far away from everyone else, and roast marshmallows with our families. The third summer we spent our time going on “adventures.”
Our adventures never started off to be very adventurous. Our very first adventure was Kale’s house. Now Kale’s house is actually quite large, considering his family is more upper class. His house has three floors, top floor, main floor, and the basement. He had his own pool, and exercise room. Like I said before, his house was massive. One day it was raining outside, so we couldn’t play outside. We were sitting on the bay window, watching the water droplets coast down the window.
“I’m bored,” I sighed.
“Me too...” he pressed his fingers against the window tracing a droplet, “what do you want to do?”
“I don’t know. What do you want to do?”
“Whatever you want to do,” he laughed.
“Do you want to bake cookies? That’s what my mom and I do every rainy day!” I looked at him and hoped the answer was yes.
“I’m not good at baking; besides my mom isn’t home so we aren’t allowed to use the oven.”
“Well then I’m out of ideas,” I leapt off the ledge and circled around the table. The room was silenced, we were both thinking of ideas but none came to my mind. After a little bit he turned his head around and grinned.
“Let’s go explore...”
“Explore where?”
“The attic,” he took my hand and took me up the stairs. We stopped below a square which was perfectly placed in the middle of the hallway. “Come on it will be fun!” he tugged the rope, and out of the ceiling came a stair case. His blue eyes dazzled, as he turned to the staircase. “Don’t be chicken Megan!”
“Fine...” I followed him up the staircase and into the attic.
Everyone’s attic is different. Some are creepy places where no one wants to go. Others are turned into bedrooms, but Kale’s felt homey. Even though it had cobwebs in every corner of the room, and dust that looked like snow covered every box and shelf, and boxes were piled everywhere, it felt homey. The boxes were labelled pictures, old toys, grandma’s stuff, clothes, etc. I turned to Kale and he was wandering the attic trying to find spiders I suppose. I was going to follow him but something in the corner of the room caught my eye. It was a chest with no label. I walked across the room, and every step I took the floor creaked beneath my feet. I crouched down and blew the dust off of the top. With a click I unlatched the buckles and opened the chest.
“What’s that?” Kale crouched by my side, and helped me lift the top.
“I don’t know, it’s a treasure chest....I think?” Kale and I managed to get that puppy open. Inside we found pictures, clothes, jewellery, toys, and little trinkets. “Woah this is beautiful...who do you think this belonged to?”
Kale picked up a picture frame and blew the dust off, “I don’t know,” he squinted at the picture and then smiled warmly, “I think this is my mom,” he pointed at a little girl. Her hair was pulled back by a headband; she was wearing a schoolgirl dress. She was sitting on a swing laughing, while holding on to an eyeless teddy bear.
“She looks so young,” beside her was a boy. He was wearing shorts and a plain white t-shirt. His hair was all messed up, and he had a couple of scrapes on his knee. His eyes were set on the little girl’s smile. They looked like they were best friends for a very long time. “Who do you think that is?” I pointed at the young boy.
He took a moment staring at the boy and then laughed, “That’s my dad. Mom used to tell me stories about when she was younger. She said dad and her were best friends. They had been neighbours since they were little. They used to do everything together...kinda like you and me,” he smiled.
We went through the chest together. It was filled with pictures of Mr. and Mrs. Nicholson. In every picture they were smiling and holding hands, and just happily in love. I glanced over at Kale, he was laughing and smiling. His laugh and smile to this day made my heart flutter. I was going to grab his hand, but something stopped me. Instead I got up and walked across the room.
As I said before the floor wasn’t very clean. There were boxes and other tripping hazard things lying around. I have never been the coordinated type of person. I was always off balance, falling, tripping, and splashing. I tried to be careful while walking over boxes and things, but the clumsiness got the better of me. I was trying attempting to hop over a box, but when I did my foot hit the side of the box and that sent me flying. I smashed into a stack of boxes, and they all came tumbling upon me. I screamed, and blocked my face from getting scratched. I could barely hear Kale’s voice over my scream. When I stopped screaming the boxes on top of me started to get lighter. Kale was above me lifting boxes off of me as fast as he could.
“Don’t worry Megan, I’m right here,” he yelled. Finally he uncovered me, and helped me off the ground. “Are you alright?”
“No...I’m all sore,” tears streamed down my cheek. I looked at my elbow and noticed I got a nice big red spot on my arm. I inspected my legs and stomach but not a scratch. I touched the red spot on my arm and winced.
Kale took my arm and rubbed his finger over it, and I winced again, “Does it hurt?” I nodded. “Let me make it better,” he leaned forward and gently pressed his lips against the red ugly spot on my elbow. His kiss made my stomach do flip flops, and my cheeks turned a shade of rosy pink. “Better?” Once again I nodded, not being able to make a sound come out of my mouth. I knew if I said anything at that moment it would have been, ‘kiss it better one more time.’

I walked down the lifeless hospital hallways alone. There were nurses smiling at me when I passed by, and some elderly folk in wheel chairs rolled along. Other than that, completely lifeless. Hospitals in my opinion have always seemed depressing. They are a sign of death, and sickness. My past experience with hospitals is that nothing good happens. I stopped in front of a vending machine, and fished in my pockets for some change. All I had was a dollar, and I need twenty-five more cents for a bottle of water. Since I didn’t have any, I sagged my head and started to walk off, until some called.
“Miss?” I spun around to find a boy standing at me, his cheeks were flushed and he was dressed up in baggy sweats and black t-shirt. He had jet black hair, and hazel eyes. They were the most gorgeous hazel eyes I have ever seen. I walked towards him and he smiled, “Sorry to bug you, but I noticed you were short a quarter,” he handed me over the twenty-five cents I needed for the water, “here I want you to have it.”
“Thanks,” I took the quarter from his hand and popped it into the machine along with my dollar, and out from the slot came my water. I twisted the cap of and took a refreshing sip of water. “You have no idea how much I needed this.”
“No problem,” he smiled, “by the way my name is Dax.”
“Nice to meet you Dax, my name is Megan,” I gestured towards the bench, “would you like to sit with me?”
“Sure,” he and I walked and sat over on the bench.
“So how old are you?” I started the conversation.
“I’m nineteen; I turn twenty in the fall,” he laced his fingers together and looked over to me, “how old are you?”
“I’m seventeen,” I looked at the ground.
“Oh so you’re still in high school? How’s that going for you?” he laughed.
“It’s alright I guess...I’m looking forward to the fall, you know being senior year and all,” I smiled.
“I remember my senior year; you have a lot to look forward too. There is so much to do that year, with exams and all.”
“Yeah...” I nodded.
“So may I ask what you are doing here?”
“Oh...” I closed my eyes, “my boyfriend got into a car accident, and I just found out about it. As of right now he’s in the emergency room. We still haven’t heard from the doctors about his condition.”
“He’ll get better,” he put a hand on my shoulder.
“I hope,” tears fell on to my lap. I pulled myself together and managed to look back at Dax, who smiled warmly. “So what are you doing in the hospital?”
“I have cancer,” he looked away and stared down the hallway, “I have been here for four months now. My mom and dad don’t want me at home; they said that they rather have me here with all the doctors. I can’t blame them for worrying about me, but I miss home.”
“I’m so sorry.”
“Don’t be,” he looked back at me, “I have learned that feeling sorry for yourself doesn’t help you recover. I had felt sorry for myself for a month, and the doctors said my cancer was getting worse. After that month I learned to just accept it and move on, because maybe someday I’ll get better or maybe I won’t. I mean I’m still Dax. Nothing has changed about me, except that I have cancer that’s it. I still have a supportive family, and a girlfriend who I love. I couldn’t ask for nothing more.”
“I’m glad you think that way Dax,” I patted his arm, “not a lot of people do, and it seems so depressing.”
“Well Megan I just want you to keep your chin up. Have faith that he will get better. Maybe he will or maybe he won’t make it. Whatever the outcome is, you just have to accept it and move on,” he leaned forward and kissed my cheek. “I have to be going now. I’m not supposed to be wandering the halls at this time,” he laughed.
“Can I walk you to your room?” I got up and stood beside him.
“Why not.”
Dax and I walked in silence to the end of the hallway. To the right of us was his room. He had a room to himself. He took a step forward and then turned around.
“Thanks for everything,” I took a step forward and gave him a friendly hug.
“Your very welcome Megan,” with that said he waved bye as I walked back towards the emergency room.

I turned the corner to find Nate sleeping on the bench. Mom and Mrs. Nicholson were still sleeping just the way I had left them. I walked over to Nate and put my hand on his. He faintly smiled and put his other hand on mine. I watched the handles on the clock go around and around. My eyes started to droop, I leaned against Nate’s shoulder and closed my eyes.

I was sitting in a white summer dress, in a field full of sunflowers. They wind was gently blowing and lifting my curls as it did. The scent of the flowers was every wear, and white petals were dancing with the wind. Off in the distance was a boy, he looked about my age. He was wearing a white dress shirt with washed denim jeans. His sandy blonde hair was a mess, but it suited him well. His blue sparkling eyes made me smile. When he caught my gaze he smiled and called my name.
“Megan,” he called. Instantly I recognized that the boy was Kale.
“Kale!” I called after. I ran through the field and he opened up his arms. I leapt into them and kissed him so hard. “Baby are you alright?”
“I’m fine. As long as I’m with you nothing is going to happen to me,” he squeezed me tight against him. When he put me down he placed his hand on my back and pulled me in closer. Gently he bent down and kissed my neck. I clasped my arms around his waist, and kept him so close to me. I wanted this feeling to stay and never leave. I didn’t want to wake up, not now, not when he was in my reach.
“Kale please don’t leave me,” I sobbed into his t-shirt, “please don’t let me be alone. I don’t know what I would do without you. Kale I promise you, if you leave me I will cry myself to sleep every night.”
“I won’t Megan I promise.” He kissed my forehead and grabbed my hand, “let’s go for a walk.”
We walked through the field hand in hand, telling each other how much we love each other. If only this wasn’t a dream I would believe it.
“Do you remember when I first met you?” he asked.
“Of course, I fell in love with you instantly,” I blushed.
“Me too...”
“Wait...what?” we stopped, and I stood in front of him with a goofy smile. “You fell in love with me when we first met?”
“Why wouldn’t I?” he pushed back a piece of my hair. “You know Megan you’re beautiful. Your smile makes me wanna kiss you and keep you in my arms. When you talk I get lost in your words. Your laugh is like Mozart’s symphony. Honestly Megan any guy would be lucky to have you. Sometimes I think I don’t deserve you,” he lifted my hand to his soft lips and gently pressed his lips against my skin.
“You deserve me, because you’re a great guy. I am lucky to have you in my life Kale, I really am.”
“No I am not, I hurt you tonight. I don’t deserve you,” suddenly Kale started to drift away from me.
“Kale...” I extended my arms.
“I don’t deserve you...” he said in a whisper, “I love you Megan,” then he disappeared right in front of my eyes.

“KALE!” I woke up screaming. Nate quickly woke up and put his arms around me. “I need to see him! Where is he? Is he alright? Nate!” I buried my face in his chest and cried. That dream felt so real. It was like he was really talking to me. When he kissed me, it felt so real. But it was a dream...just a dream.
“Shhh,” Nate rocked me back and forth, “it was just a bad dream Megan. Close your eyes and go back to sleep. I will wake you up when the doctor’s have some news for us.
“It felt so real,” I said in a whisper. I looked up and Nate, “I don’t have a good feeling about today. I feel like something really bad is going to happen.”
“You’re just in shock. So why don’t you go to sleep?”
“I can’t, I’m afraid every time that I close my eyes I’m going to see him. I’m going to see him being taken away from me.”

The doctors finally came out of the emergency room. He was tall, and his hair was thinning out. He took off the sweat off his forehead with the back of his hand. Kale’s mom stood up with my mom’s hands on her shoulders. Mr. Nicholson and my dad got up from their bench, and walked towards the doctors. I shakily got up from the bench and out of Nate’s arms. He offered to walk to me towards them but I could do this. I had to handle whatever was thrown at me. I stood beside my dad, and he wrapped an arm around my shoulder. My mom took her free hand and laced her fingers through mine.
“Is he alright?” Mrs. Nicholson choked on the question. The doctor looked at her with sad eyes and rubbed the back of his neck.
“I don’t know how to put this in words,” he sighed, “but...I’m sorry your son is no more...”

I don’t know what happened but everything seemed to be going slower. Mr. Nicholson hugged his wife, while she bawled into his jacket. Both of my parent’s turned to me. My dad looked very worried about me, his mouth was moving but no sound was coming out. I turned to my mom; her eyes were filled with tears. She put both of her arms around me. Nate came from behind me and put his hands on my shoulders.
Suddenly my knees started to buckle, and the realization kicked in. My heart started to race, my legs and hands started to shake. Tears were constantly falling down my cheek. He was gone, he really wasn’t here anymore. My heart felt like it had been shot three times with a bullet and then run over with a semi, over and over again. My stomach felt like it had been turned inside out, and then acid was poured into it. I shook off my mom and brother, and turned around. I ran and ran. I didn’t know where my legs would take me but it had to be anywhere but here. Anywhere else, just not the place where my soul mate, my boyfriend, my best friend, my everything died. I covered my mouth to hold in the sobs, and sprinted down the hallway. Nurses and doctors tried to stop me, but I pushed past them. No one could make me feel better; no one could hurt me more. I was done.

  7. Hmm, I wonder why Kale won't sleep with her? He's not secretly gay is he? It worries me slightly that he's like that, and he also seems to drink a lot when they are having a night to them selves so that she gets mad at him and won't try anything, if you know what I mean.
